Tracka, BudgIT’s transparency and accountability platform which allows citizens to track and give feedback on public projects in Nigeria, has recorded notable results in six states, the organisation has announced.
Development Diaries gathered that BudgIT, which took to its Twitter handle to call for celebrations, highlighted achievements in Osun, Niger, Kaduna, Lagos, Ekiti and Kebbi States.
Corruption is believed to have given room for diversion of the limited public funds, undermined economic progress and impeded policy changes required for development in Nigeria, one of the world’s oil producers.
With a view to ensuring implementation of budgetary allocations, BudgIT has set up Tracka in 29 states across Africa’s most populous nation.
The organisation says it will ensure that citizens are well informed on budget and implementation processes by providing them with adequate budgetary information.
‘Our advocacy for improved service delivery to Nigerians through our TrackaNG platform yielded notable results in August’, BudgIT tweeted.
It was learnt that Governor Kayode Fayemi in July 2020 announced the commencement of numerous renovation of projects, including primary health care (PHC) facilities and public schools, across the state following Tracka’s efforts.
The Ekiti governor stated that his administration had ‘commenced the renovation of PHC facilities across the state, starting from Okeyinmi Comprehensive Health Centre as well as 15 others, to prepare adequate infrastructural facilities for the provision of basic health care services’.
Another notable success, according to BudgIT, was Niger State’s approval of Tracka’s request to monitor education projects across the state.
The organisation noted that the government of the north-central state granted access to data covering Universal Basic Education intervention projects in the state from 2013 to 2018.
Additionally, the Tracka team in the state, BudgIT noted, aided the completion of an abandoned primary health centre in Gurara Gawu Babangida, Lambata, after calling the government’s attention to the project.
‘Our tracking officers monitored the failed sections of Lawanson road in Surulere LGA, Lagos State’, it added.
‘We reported the case to Lagos State Public Works @LSPWC_Official and the reconstruction of the failed sections commenced a week after. The Health Centre has been constructed and completed’.
The organisation said that there were notable successes in Osun, Kaduna, and Kebbi, too, with the Osun State government deploying resources to commence the construction of a primary health centre in Ido community.
BudgIT tweeted, ‘We discovered an abandoned primary health centre in Ido community, Egbedore LGA, Osun State. This facility is among the 332 healthcare centres to be renovated in Osun State.
‘Through our advocacy movement and persistent calls on the Osun State government and other relevant authorities, resources have been deployed and the abandoned project is now under construction’.
