The African Union Commission (AUC) is seeking to fill the position of Director of Protocol.
The African Union is a continental body consisting of 55 member states.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain a strategic plan to form good working relations with other organisations
- Develop and maintain rules and procedures relating to practices and services, including the issuance of certificates of merit for departing PRC members
- Manage all protocol-related matters, resources and activities of the commission
- Ensure overall supervision of the protocol directorate and handle policy matters with host government, embassies and international organisations
- Advise the commission on all matters of protocol and ensure existing international practices regarding diplomatic protocol at ceremonies and public functions as well as forms of communication are adhered to
- Communicate protocol rules and procedures to staff of the commission
- Supervise the preparation and organisation of official functions and ensure that the conduct of ceremonies, official programmes, and functions are appropriately carried out
- Coordinate and follows up appointments of the chairperson of the commission for all public functions and ceremonies such as visits of dignitaries, and presentation of letters of credence by newly appointed ambassadors to the AU
- Ensure necessary arrangements for settlements of newly recruited staff members are made and assistance provided for securing accommodation and completing all residence formalities with host country authorities and institutions
- Provide periodic review of the protocol manual
- Oversee and approve issuance of AU passport
- Prepare the programme budget of the directorate and oversee programme implementation and budget execution
- Ensure the full implementation of the headquarters agreement by the host government or entice re-negotiations in case of obsolete articles of these Agreement
- Ensure the use of high diplomatic standards in the organisation’s interaction with dignitaries and other international organisation
- Ensure high standard logistical organisation of summits and other conferences held at or outside the headquarters
- Contribute to the popularisation of the African Union as well as the implementation of Agenda 2063
- Manage all activities related to visits of dignitaries, functions and programmes
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Public Relations, International Relations, Political Science, or Diplomacy, or a related field
- 15 years, minimum, of relevant work experience, with eight years at the managerial level and five years at supervisory level
- Leadership and management skills
- Communication, report writing and presentation skills
- Negotiation and interpersonal skills
- Research and analytical skills
- Knowledge and working understanding of AU policies, strategies and work processes
- Knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office applications and AU computer programmes
- Fluency in one of the AU working languages (Arabic, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish)
- Fluency in another AU language will be a plus
