What is preventing the arrest of ‘powerful’ Nigerians responsible for illegal mining activities?
Development Diaries reports that Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, recently blamed unnamed ‘powerful Nigerians’ for the illegal mining activities and acts of terrorism going on in different parts of the country.
Historically, the mining sector in Nigeria has faced challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, regulatory issues, and insecurity in certain mining regions.
Bearing this in mind, instead of lamenting about a problem within his jurisdiction, Alake should be seen taking proactive measures to address the issue at hand.
The regulatory framework for the mining sector in Nigeria has been reviewed to encourage investment and improve transparency. However, bureaucratic processes and unclear regulations have, at times, created obstacles for investors.
The future of Nigeria’s mining industry hinges on the successful implementation of reforms, the expansion of infrastructure, and the resolution of security issues.
With continued efforts to attract investments and improve the regulatory environment, there is potential for growth and contribution to the country’s economic diversification.
If there are ‘powerful’ Nigerians behind illegal mining, the minister must fish out these individuals and reveal their names to the public.
Also, as the minister has put the conservative worth of minerals deposited in the country at over U.S.$700 billion, he must ensure that policies and initiatives are implemented to make the mining sector blossom as expected.
