Sudan: Addressing Extrajudicial Killing of Civilians

Sudan War

Alarming reports of extrajudicial killings, torture, and widespread destruction by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and its allies following their recapture of Wad Madani raises serious concerns for the safety of civilians.

Development Diaries reports that the armed forces and its allies have executed at least 45 civilians in El Dinde 72 hours after retaking the state, according to local reports.

We also understand that villages have been torched by the Sudan Shield Forces, one of the allies of the SAF, killing eight people, including children, and abducting 14 others.

It is understood that these vicious acts are revenge cycles targeted against those accused of collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

While the two-year conflict has raged on, the numerous violations against civilians and the destruction of properties and key infrastructures remain the centre of discussions and concern.

Since the start of the war in April 2023, about 60,000 people have been killed with more than 11.5 million displaced.

The SAF, RSF, and all of their allies cannot continue to take laws into their hands while crimes against civilians go on.

While the SAF has denied responsibility for the violations in Wad Madani, attributing the abuses to unnamed entities seeking to damage its reputation, its continuous neglect to address rights violators in its ranks makes it difficult to clear its name.

Development Diaries calls on the SAF to carry out an impartial investigation into the attacks on civilians by its officers and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

We also urge all parties to the war to prioritise the safety of civilians and ensure the people are treated in line with the tenets of international humanitarian laws.
