Nigerian Newspapers: Key Advocacy Calls | Thursday 16th January, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

From rising inflation to government spending controversies, top stories in today’s Nigerian newspapers paint a picture of the challenges Nigerians face daily.

1. 34.8 percent inflation rate triggers fears of rising prices, hardship – Punch

The organised private sector is sounding the alarm over Nigeria’s soaring inflation, which seems to have gone on a shopping spree of its own: making everything pricier, from raw materials and production to logistics and machinery.

Our Take: With inflation at 34.8 percent, Nigerians are stretching thinner than the naira. Rising costs are choking businesses and citizens alike. We call on President Bola Tinubu to deliver real economic relief before all we have left to export is frustration.

2. ‘War veterans, wives of fallen heroes lament neglect despite promises’  – The Guardian

War veterans, military retirees and wives of fallen heroes have urged federal and state governments to step up efforts towards improving their welfare.

Our Take: We call on the president, who is the commander-in-chief, to honour our fallen heroes and their families with action, not just ceremonies. Widows and veterans cannot survive on promises alone.

3. ‘Senate queries state house over N5.9 billion spendings on vehicles’ – Daily Trust

The Senate Committee on Special Duties has raised an eyebrow (and maybe a calculator) at the state house management for splurging a jaw-dropping N3.9 billion on operational vehicles and another two billion naira to swap out its SUVs in 2024.

Our Take: While querying the state house over its N5.9 billion vehicle splurge is a good start, Nigerians need more than rhetorical accountability. We call on the Senate to go beyond questions, demand transparency, and ensure taxpayers’ money is not treated like a bottomless fuel tank for luxury rides.
