Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre (BGHPC) has donated wheelchairs to 75 persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Balbadu, Birni Kudu area of Jigawa State, northwest Nigeria.

The nonprofit, it was gathered, delivered the wheelchairs with the goal to ease the movement of PWDs, including children, as they learn productive skills and go to school.

According to the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), about 95 percent of children with disabilities in developing countries are out of school, with 90 percent of them never gaining access to basic education in their lifetime.

Figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) also show that Nigeria is home to an estimated 32 million people with disabilities, most of whom are children.

‘First, I want to call and encourage those that benefitted from this gesture to use the wheelchairs and go back to school’, Media Officer of the organisation, Sandra Yilgwan, quoted BGHPC’s founder, Ayuba Gufwan, as saying.

‘They should also use it to learn skills or start a business, because there is ability in disability.

‘Our joy is to see everyone living with disability being independent and also contribute their quarter to the growth of the society’.

Gufwan also called on parents of children with disabilities to cater for them, and ensure they attended school or learn a skill in order to be useful members of the society.
