Plan International is seeking to fill the role of Senior Gender Specialist.

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to the project team, including partners
  • Contribute to the process of annual work plans and ensure the integration of the gender perspective and the safeguarding of children and young people
  • Support the development of annual narrative project reports for the funder and other reports as required by the project, to ensure gender equality is included in all sections of the report
  • Provide project staff and project counterparts with capacity building, where appropriate, through personalised training on gender equality for various stakeholders
  • Carry out gender analyses and lead the development and implementation of the project’s gender strategy
  • Design specific quality assurance tools and mechanisms to ensure high quality gender mainstreaming in all project components
  • Build networks and/or participate in existing networks of gender equality and women’s empowerment
  • Coordinate periodic reviews to identify learnings, best practices and successes in gender and areas for improvement
  • Collaborate with other technical specialists to ensure the effective integration of gender considerations in education, water and sanitation and monitoring and evaluation
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned in support of the achievement of organisational goals
  • Work collaboratively, anticipate and overcome real or potential challenges that the consortium faces in the implementation of this project
  • Work in a matrix relationship that requires excellent working relationships and excellent communication for problem or conflict resolution
  • Analyse problems, identify key risks or adverse trends, and provide rapid solutions to gender issues

Requirements

  • University degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Education with specialisation in Gender and Development, or a related discipline
  • Five years, minimum, of experience in leading interventions aimed at transforming gender, including the development and implementation of gender strategies
  • Demonstrable experience in advocacy, particularly around gender issues
  • Thorough understanding of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and other human rights instruments
  • Knowledge of the G7 Charlevoix Declaration and its commitment to quality education for girls living in fragile and conflict states, as well as the Feminist International Assistance Policy (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and delivering gender equality workshops and trainings that are participatory and needs-based
  • Experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders at all levels of an organisation, including policymakers, senior management, local government and implementing partners
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design, implementation and monitoring of inclusive and gender-sensitive development programmes
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, collaborative experience, creativity and willingness to innovate
  • Experience in managing people and ability to build, develop and motivate an effective team
