Apply: DAAD In-Region Scholarship 2020

The German Academic Exchange Service/Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) cooperates with the Stellenbosch University to offer up to five in-region scholarships for master’s studies and up to four in-region scholarships for PhD studies at the Stellenbosch University for the 2021 intake.

The scholarships will be awarded subject to the provision of funds and the conclusion of the contract between the host institution and DAAD.

The programme aims at fostering strong, internationally-oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related master’s or doctoral studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and/or research at a higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.

By training future academic and professional leaders, the programme contributes to the following long-term impacts: qualified professionals’ involvement in the solution of development-related problems in Sub-Saharan Africa, graduates strengthening education and research in Sub-Saharan Africa, structural strengthening and regional networking of partner institutions and partner universities.

Benefits

  • €100,000–€500,000 per year for up to three years, or any other amount or time that will be determined based on the recommendation of the research grant committees (the award may fund all or part of the proposed project and for all or part of the requested time period)

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have successfully completed, generally, a three-year university degree (master’s candidates) or a two-year university degree (doctoral candidates) with above average results (second class upper division, minimum)
  • Applicants must clearly show motivation and strong commitment
  • Applicants must have thorough knowledge of the language of instruction
  • Applicants must have generally completed their last university degree not more than six years ago at the time of application
  • Applicants must must be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South Africa)
  • Applicants should generally be a) staff members of a public university, b) candidates considered for teaching or research staff recruitment, c) from the public sector, d) Alumni of the DAFI programme
