Zambia: Foundation Launches SGBV Handbook

Zambia

The startling increase in sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) cases in Zambia emphasises how important it is to have readily available information on SGBV and support.

Development Diaries reports that, in commemorating the 16-day campaign against SGBV, Sistah Sistah Foundation has launched a handbook that offers guidance and support to victims of SGBV.

Despite progress, Zambia faces challenges in effectively combating SGBV. These challenges include inadequate funding, gaps in the legal system, societal attitudes, and limited resources for survivors.

According to the Zambia Police Service, over 10,000 cases of GBV were reported nationwide between January and March 2023, with 1,924 of the cases involving girls, 750 involving boys, 6,721 women, and 1,852 males. Lusaka has the highest number of cases reported.

Deep-rooted cultural norms and practices contribute to the prevalence of SGBV. Practices such as early marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) also continue to affect women and girls.

Zambia has enacted laws to address SGBV, including the Anti-Gender-Based Violence Act, 2011. This legislation criminalises various forms of violence, establishes protection orders, and outlines penalties for offenders.

Despite these legal measures, challenges persist in terms of enforcement, awareness, and accessibility to justice, particularly in rural areas.

Development Diaries calls on the government of Zambia to sustain efforts across various sectors to create lasting change in the fight against GBV.
