The Side-by-Side Movement for Gender Justice in Nigeria has reiterated the importance of justice and fairness as the world marked the 2022 International Day of Peace.
Observed annually, International Day of Peace (September 21) chronicles the ideals of peace within and among all nations and peoples.
The 2022 theme, ‘End racism. Build peace’, calls for a world in which people are treated equally, regardless of their religion, gender and race.
‘Peace is the path we take for bringing growth and prosperity to society. Without peace and peaceful co-existence, political strength, economic development and stability and cultural growth will not be possible’, the group said in a statement.
According to a report by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), between 2020 and 2021, 7,691 civilians in Nigeria were killed in armed conflicts.
‘Peace is the path we take for bringing growth and prosperity to society. Without peace and peaceful co-existence, political strength, economic development and stability and cultural growth will not be possible’, the statement read.
‘For these and other benefits, both Islam and Christianity attach great importance to peace everywhere and at all times. They enjoin peace building through dialogue, negotiation and reconciliation for peaceful co-existence’.
Peacebuilding remains a fundamental tool in dealing with people and supporting societies in managing their differences and conflicts without resorting to violence.
