The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has condemned the two explosions that rocked Kampala, Uganda’s capital, on 16 November, 2021.
Suicide bombers targeted the Ugandan capital, killing at least three people and injuring more than 30 others, according to police.
Three attackers on motorbikes detonated explosives – one, very close to the Ugandan parliament, and one near the central police station.
Officials have blamed the attack on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group based in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and allied to the ISIL group in Central Africa.
‘The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD ), Workneh Gebeyehu, condemns the terrorist attack in Kampala this morning’, IGAD said in a statement.
‘He extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Uganda and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.
‘The executive secretary supports the government of Uganda in its fight against terrorism within principles of rule of law and respect for human rights’.
An official press statement from the police revealed that security forces intercepted a fourth attacker and recovered an improvised explosive from him. A second explosive was also recovered from his home.
The police also noted that bomb threats are still active even as security forces ‘are now pursuing other members of the terror groups’.
Humanity First, an international relief and development agency that works with the world’s most vulnerable people, has also condemned the attacks.
‘Our #ThoughtsAndPrayers are with the people of Uganda during this painful moment when lives have been lost and scores injured at the hand of terror’, Humanity First Uganda tweeted.
The latest attacks came about three weeks after two separate blasts, blamed on the ADF, killed two people and injured several others in central Uganda.
The Ugandan police have also issued a public notice detailing guidelines on terror threats.
