Wike and Needless ‘Befitting Residence’ for Vice President

Despite Nigeria’s struggling economy, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) intends to spend N15 billion building a ‘befitting residence’ for the vice president.

Development Diaries reports that although the National Assembly and President Bola Tinubu recently passed and signed a supplementary budget for the federal government that included an additional N2.5 billion for the vice president’s current mansion’s repair, the FCT Minister, Nysom Wike, still wants a new residence for the office.

In the face of economic challenges, Nigeria’s focus should be directed towards addressing pressing issues rather than allocating resources for the construction of a new residence for the vice president.

The FCT faces challenges concerning security, transportation, infrastructure, and administration of city and satellite towns.

For instance, there is hardly any urban mass transit, traffic lights are not functional, and the number of slums is constantly increasing. These are areas in which budgetary allocations to the FCT must be prioritised instead of unnecessary expenditures.

Allocating funds for the construction of a new residence for the vice president is an unnecessary burden on an already strained economy. Prioritising economic recovery and stability should take precedence over non-essential expenditures, given the situation of the economy.

The government must demonstrate accountability and responsiveness to the needs of the people.

Development Diaries calls on the Senate to promptly reject the proposal by the FCT minister as well as other proposed unnecessary spending.
