Malawi: MRCS Opens Emergency Treatment Unit

The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has handed over an emergency treatment unit to Mangochi District Hospital to support the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was learnt that the country’s government had appealed for more emergency treatment centres in the southern African country.

Development Diaries gathered that with financial support from Agricultural Transformational Initiative (ATI), the MRCS spent MK44 million on the refurbishment and fittings of the ward and procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other medical equipment, including an oxygen concentrator.

It was learnt that the refurbished emergency unit, redesigned to have female and male sections and two ablution rooms for male and female patients, was a dilapidated Tuberculosis Ward.

Covid-19, which has spread to all the districts of Malawi, was confirmed to have reached the country on 2 April 2020.
