United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has conducted a three-day training workshop for over 90 programme and finance technicians from 45 civil society organisations in Liberia.
The training, it was gathered, focused on building the capacities of CSOs to improve their programme planning, implementation, monitoring, filing, documentation and reporting.
Monitoring visits and documents reviewed indicated that there was a need to enhance the capacities of CSOs to adhere to UNDP rules in financial management and reporting.
Some key thematic areas include documentation, filing processes, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting.
It was gathered that some of the main objectives of the training was to get UNDP’s partners to understand how the UN programme’s processes and procedures are crucial to achieving quality and timely implementation of development results.
Also, the training was conducted with a view to strengthening partners’ capacities to monitor and report on planned activities.
Liberia, which has been hosting numerous transnational interventions since 1960s, was on the road to recovery and stability following its civil war until the Ebola crisis struck.
According to AidData, 7,250 aid projects were launched in Liberia between 1960 and 2013, offering $13.7 billion in international funding.
CSOs in the West African nation have created a number of peacebuilding mechanisms that can serve as positive models for other contexts.
For instance, the civil society-led Peace Huts seek to increase understanding of and access to justice and rule of law actors in rural counties.
It is understood that these Peace Huts, run by WANEP, also address women’s inequalities by providing safe spaces for women to express themselves on reconciliation and peacebuilding and support their economic empowerment.
