Amnesty International (AI) has condemned the killing of a lawyer, Omobolanle Raheem, by a police operative at Ajah, Lagos State, on Christmas day.
Development Diaries learnt that an unnamed policeman attached to the Ajah Police Station and his team tried to stop Raheem and her family members as they reportedly drove back home from a Christmas church service.
Raheem was shot when the car she was in tried to make a U-turn under the Ajah bridge.
In a post on its Twitter handle, AI demanded that the erring officer be made to face prosecution in independent, impartial public trials.
While demanding an end to police brutality in Nigeria, the rights organisation also described the reckless resort of the police to deadly force as a human rights violation.
‘Amnesty International strongly condemns the killing of Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem by a police officer on Christmas day at Ajiwe Ajah Lagos’, it tweeted.
‘It is horrifying that police officers who are meant to protect lives take it with impunity’.
The Nigeria Police Force’s announcement of investigation into this tragic incident must lead to justice, and the erring police officers must face prosecution in independent, impartial, public trials. Reckless resort of the police to deadly force is a human rights violation.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has assured that justice will prevail.
The killing of Raheem is another case of police brutality and extrajudicial killings that have been recorded in Lagos and other parts of the country.
Also, it comes just over two years after the famous #EndSARS protests.
