Former Chief Justice of Rwanda Professor Sam Rugege has been appointed to the board of directors of Weinstein International Foundation (WIF).
Rugege is the only African on the board of the U.S.-based non-profit organisation, which works with Rwanda to promote mediation in dispute resolution.
Rugege, who has been a key player in the judicial sector reforms of Rwanda, had served as chief justice and deputy chief justice.
Reacting to his appointment, Rugege, who is currently the chairperson of the Court Mediation Advisory Committee, said it was a privilege.
He said he will be working part-time and occasionally, together with other board members, giving ideas on how particular disputes in Africa or elsewhere can be solved amicably.
The foundation has been assisting Rwanda in preparing materials like mediators’ manuals and policy documents which were giving a facelift to mediation in the country.
According to Rugege, his appointment will, among others, strengthen Rwanda’s relationship with WIF and also strengthen the already existing cooperation.
It is understood that three Rwandans – Bernadette Uwicyeza, Harrison Mutabazi, and Anastase Nabahire – are associated with WIF and are promoting its work of mediation in the country.
