RULAAC Reacts to Police Killing of Citizen in Delta

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has condemned the extrajudicial killing of 31-year-old Onyeka Emmanuel Ibeh in Delta State, southern Nigeria.

Development Diaries reports that a police inspector identified as Obi Ebri reportedly shot Ibeh on 05 April in Asaba, the state capital.

It was gathered that Ibeh was shot dead for allegedly refusing to part with N100 bribe demanded at a police checkpoint by Ebri.

Ebri, it is understood, has been arrested by the police in the state.

RULAAC Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, in a statement, called for prompt, impartial and effective investigation into the ‘reckless shooting’.

‘RULAAC is shocked that after the events of #EndSARS in October 2020 and its aftermath, a police officer could still engage in such reckless abuse of firearms and abuse of police authority, to kill a fellow citizen for refusing to pay bribe of one hundred Naira at a checkpoint’, the organisation said in a statement.

It called on the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Muhammed Ali, to ensure a speedy and transparent disciplinary procedure that will lead to substantial justice.

The EndSARS protests in Nigeria began in 2020 as a call to end police brutality and extrajudicial killings in the country.

Thousands of young Nigerians took to the streets to protest against police brutality after a video went viral of a man allegedly killed by the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

However, after the disbandment of SARS, there have been continuous cases of police brutality and extra-judicial killings.
