Google has announced a call for participation in the 2022 Google News Initiative (GNI) Challenge.
The GNI, according to Google, is designed to help journalism thrive in the digital age.
It aims to empower news innovators from around the world to demonstrate new thinking in online journalism and the development of new publishing business models.
In turn, Google hopes to share knowledge generated from the projects with the wider industry.
Benefits
- Google will provide up to $150,000 for selected projects and will finance up to 70 percent of the total project cost
Eligibility
- The challenge is open to news organisations in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa that aim to produce original journalism whose projects focus on innovation towards creating a more sustainable and diverse news ecosystem
- Established publishers, online-only players, news startups, publisher consortia and local industry associations as well as freelancers and sole traders are eligible to apply
- All projects should have clear indicators showing the impact of the project from a user perspective and/or from a business perspective
