Nigerian Newspapers: Key Demands for Government Action | Tuesday 17th June, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines, accompanied by our advocacy-driven demands for government action in addressing citizens’ concerns.

1.  The Guardian: CDS Links Military Saboteurs to Benue Massacre ahead of Tinubu’s Visit

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, yesterday alleged the presence of saboteurs within the Nigerian military, implicating them in the Yelwata massacre in Benue State that claimed hundreds of lives.

Our Take: General Musa, if the enemy’s already inside the barracks, maybe it’s time to sweep the house before guarding the gate. Start with your own ranks, because there is no sense fighting bandits while your own men are sending them directions.

2. The Nation: Tinubu heads for Benue to Galvanise against Serial Killings

Alarmed by serial killings by terrorists and armed herders, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will tomorrow visit Benue State. The meeting is designed to generate home-grown solutions to the prolonged violence.

Our Take: President Tinubu, your visit to Benue must go beyond sympathy and speeches; this is a test of your government’s constitutional duty to protect lives and property. The bloodshed has gone on far too long. It is time to match concern with commitment by ensuring that security forces act decisively, saboteurs are flushed out, and communities are safeguarded. Anything less is a failure of the very duty your office swore to uphold.

3. Vanguard: Politicians now Launder Billions Through Yahoo Boys – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that politically exposed persons (PEPs) in Nigeria are using internet fraudsters, popularly known as ‘yahoo-yahoo boys’, to launder billions of naira in stolen public funds into offshore accounts.

Our Take: Chairman Olukoyede, if the EFCC truly wants to shake the foundations of corruption, it’s time to stop speaking in shadows and start naming names. The public deserves more than vague warnings, we need transparency, accountability, and the political will to expose those weaponising ‘yahoo boys’ to launder stolen billions. If these politicians are bold enough to loot openly, the EFCC must be bold enough to call them out, prosecute them, and prove that no one is above the law.
