Nigerian Newspapers: Key Demands for Government Action | Friday 20th June, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Here is a roundup of some Nigerian newspaper headlines, accompanied by our advocacy-driven demands for government action in addressing citizens’ concerns.

1. Vanguard: Benue massacre: Troops got faulty info on herders’ movements —CDS

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa, yesterday, disclosed that troops received intelligence that more killer herders were on their way to some communities in Benue State in different locations, mobilised and deployed to the named communities but on getting there, discovered the intelligence was faulty, only to learn the attack was elsewhere. He added that informants from the state also provided accommodation, feeding and even women to the criminal elements, who attacked Yelewata community during which no fewer than 200 persons were killed.

Our Take: The massacre in Yelewata requires urgent reform, accountability, and justice. The CDS must ensure the military strengthens its intelligence-gathering systems, weed out informants enabling terror, and ensure swift prosecution of both the attackers and their collaborators.

2. Punch: Food inflation: NSA, 36 states launch joint action

The 36 state governors have agreed to work closely with the federal government to harmonise levies, eliminate illegal checkpoints, and enhance the free flow of goods across states as part of efforts to address food security issues across the country.

Our Take: To truly ease the burden of food inflation on Nigerians, this agreement must move beyond headlines to visible, measurable outcomes. Also, the proposed state-level security architecture should be swiftly operationalised to protect farmlands, reduce post-harvest losses, and rebuild farmer confidence. Nigerians deserve results, affordable food, safe markets, and a food system that works for all.

3. The Nation: Tinubu: every Nigerian will feel impact of good governance

President Bola Tinubu yesterday said that his administration will ensure that every Nigerian feels the impact of good governance. The president said his administration will continue to work tirelessly to deliver infrastructure projects that will enhance the quality of life for the citizens.

Our Take: While President Tinubu assures that every Nigerian will eventually feel the impact of good governance, the question remains: how long must citizens endure hunger and insecurity before the promise meets reality? Nigerians are not asking for miracles; if good governance is truly in motion, let it get on the express lane.
