Nigerian Newspapers: Key Advocacy Calls | Wednesday 29th January, 2025

Nigerian Newspapers

Today, Nigerian newspapers are buzzing with major headlines and here’s a roundup of the biggest stories shaping conversations across the country.

1. ‘Police arraign Sowore today for calling Egbetokun ‘illegal IG’ ‘– Punch

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated legal action against activist Omoyele Sowore over comments he made on social media, referring to Egbetokun as an ‘illegal IG’.

Our Take: The Nigeria Police Force must stop weaponising the Cybercrime Act to silence critics. Sowore calling the IG ‘illegal’ shouldn’t be more alarming than the actual concerns about legality in governance. Instead of playing judge and jury over tweets, the police should focus on upholding the rule of law, not bending it to shield powerful figures from public scrutiny.

2. ‘Trump Immigration: 5,144 Nigerians face arrest, deportation from US’ – Vanguard

No fewer than 5,144 Nigerians may be affected in the initial stage of the ongoing deportation exercises from the United States of America as President Donald Trump’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants continues.

Our Take: NiDCOM and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must act now and not allow 5,144 Nigerians to be treated like unwanted luggage. We call on them to engage US authorities, provide legal support, and ensure their rights aren’t tossed out with their return tickets.
