Nigeria: When Will Poor Citizens Receive Akpabio’s ‘Prayers’?

So Nigerian senators actually plan to use public funds to enjoy holidays while millions of Nigerians, the people they represent, suffer?

Development Diaries reports that Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, while addressing his colleagues during Wednesday’s plenary, mentioned the disbursement of ‘holiday allowances’ by the clerk of the National Assembly into the bank accounts of various senators.

The senate president had said the distribution of a monetary token was a means to enable the senators to enjoy their holidays.

This development suggests that the ruling class is not willing to make commitments towards reducing the harsh economic impact of fuel subsidy removal on poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

While Nigerians await the implementation of the ‘palliatives’ promised them by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, the senators are sharing largesse from time to time, unaware of the hardship faced by millions of citizens.

The senate president had once asked Nigerians to be patient with Tinubu’s administration as he (Tinubu) tackles the country’s endemic challenges.

Also, Tinubu himself has at different times appealed to citizens for patience and understanding, particularly the youths, assuring them that the hardships of the moment will eventually give way to a more prosperous, equitable and inclusive economy.

But why should over 130 million poor Nigerians, including vulnerable citizens, be the ones to make sacrifices and endure hardships?

When are the senators going to start making sacrifices also for the sake of the general good of the country?

The primary function of the lawmakers is to make laws that will benefit the majority of Nigerians, not to keep sharing funds that could be used to better the lives of the masses.

Development Diaries calls on the senate president and other senators to forfeit whatever ‘holiday allowances’ are given to them to prove to Nigerians that they are empathetic towards their situation.
