Namibia: Support e.V Donates Sunglasses to PLWA

Support e.V., a non-profit organisation based in Ulm, Germany, has donated a large consignment of sunscreen lotion and sunglasses to people living with albinism (PLWA).

The donations were delivered to the Support in Namibia of Albinism Sufferers Requiring Assistance (SINASRA).

The items, consisting of more than 9,000 packs of SPF 30/50 Vichy and Eucerin sunscreen lotion as well as untested sunglasses and another 200 tubes of Avene and La Roche-Passay SPF 50 and 30 lotion, were made to reduce the effect of the sun on people with albinism in the country.

Albinism affects the production of melanin, the pigment that colours skin, hair and eyes; and people with the condition have a reduced amount of melanin, or no melanin at all.

Development Diaries understands that an estimated 2,000 out of about 2.4 million people living with albinism live in Namibia.

‘SINASRA and the albino communities in Namibia are very appreciative of the generous donations received from Support e.V’, representative of SINASRIA, Dr Peter Stoermer, said.

‘Sunscreen is very expensive and we will continue to distribute the sunscreen to albino organisations and hospitals throughout the country’.

Stoermer stated that albinism was a manageable condition provided there was adequate funding to support albinos in their unique lifestyles.
