Kenya: Power Up Launches Energy Campaign

Power Up initiative has called on the government of Kenya to widen access to clean and affordable energy in the country.

Development Diaries reports that the call was made during the launch of the campaign in Nairobi with Kenya’s Minister of Energy, Paul Mbuthi, in attendance.

According to the group, scaling up access to clean and affordable energy is crucial in preparing the country for climate dangers and laying the foundation for sustainable development.

It is understood that in Kenya, droughts, floods, and livestock diseases are wiping out livelihoods, underscoring the need for the country to help its poorest population.

Speaking at the event, ACCESS Coalition’s Florence Gichoya said it was time Kenya cement its status as Africa’s climate trailblazer.

‘Wealthy nations and financial institutions must boost support for climate adaptation, particularly access to clean and affordable energy’, Gichoya said.

‘Also, Kenya can confirm its status as a continental climate trailblazer, with energy policies that will help accelerate socio-economic growth for all in the society’.

The group further highlighted the importance of affordable power in driving improved agriculture and other business opportunities.

In a country where farming creates 30 percent of GDP and 56 percent of employment, extreme weather and other climate impacts threaten Kenya’s ambition to transform into an industrialising, middle-income country, as set out in its Vision 2030 agenda.
