The World Bank Group (WBG) is seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of Environmental Economist.

The bank, with 189 member countries and more than 120 offices worldwide, works with public and private sector partners, invests in groundbreaking projects and uses data, research, and technology to develop solutions to the most urgent global challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Provide economics support to environment and natural resource programmes across the East African region
  • Analyse macro and fiscal policies related to environment, including taxation and subsidy policies
  • Carry out, with minimum supervision, studies on selected economics issues on the critical path to solving problems
  • Effectively communicate results of studies through written and verbal communication
  • Participate in and/or lead natural resource or environmental management projects and the policy dialog with the government and other stakeholders on environment or natural resources
  • Coordinate with other financiers to review sector policies, strategies, and legislation
  • Support the building of a portfolio of environment projects that could include waste management, forestry and land restoration
  • Work across a range of lending products including development of policy loans, payment-for-results programmes, investment loans and guarantee product
  • Participate as team member or team leader in the development and/or supervision of implementation of environment or natural resources activities or components in projects
  • Seek and develop opportunities to integrate sound environmental management and policies in investment project operations

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Economics, Applied Economics, Environmental Economics, Finance or a related field
  • Five years, minimum, of full-time relevant professional experience post master’s degree on research or applied work as an economist on environmental issues
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Strong sense of teamwork and ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of second language (French, Spanish, or Portuguese) is a plus
