The University of Antwerp has opened applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship project aimed at understanding how urbanisation interacts with economic development in Africa.
The project, focusing on urbanisation, poverty and inequality in Africa, will link large spatial datasets of processed satellite imagery on built-up areas and emitted nightlight in Africa to micro-level household panel and census data.

Eligibility
- Master’s degree in Economics or related social sciences, or will have obtained it by the time you start work
- Demonstrate an excellent study results
- Demonstrate excellent applied econometrics skills
- Must have conducted independent research before, e.g., as part of a master’s thesis
- Knowledge of GIS software such as QGIS (desirable)
- Must have a proven interest in development issues in general and for Africa in particular
- Experience with survey or other fieldwork (desirable)
- Can think creatively, with attention to both detail and the bigger picture
- Can write clearly, concisely and precisely in English
