The International Labour Organisation (ILO) is seeking to fill the position of Technical Specialist on Occupational Safety and Health.

The mission of the ILO is to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue on work-related issues.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake technical advisory missions in the countries of the sub-region and provide governments and employers’ and workers’ organisations with advice on the development, formulation and implementation of OSH profiles, policies and programmes, and on the application of the principles set out in the relevant ILO Conventions and Recommendations and in the global strategy on OSH
  • Advise national authorities, upon their request, on the drafting and revision of legal texts relating to OSH and on the enhancement, strengthening and establishment of national OSH systems, including in respect of regulatory and consultative capacities, technical knowledge and training capacities
  • Provide advice on the formulation and implementation of OSH projects and practical programmes, including by conducting analytical and other research on the major OSH challenges of the sub-region and by collecting, analysing and evaluating the available information (primarily statistics, legal texts and training materials in the countries of the sub-region)
  • Formulate and encourage the formulation of innovative strategies and programmes to establish effective OSH systems for traditional target groups of the OSH community (labour inspectors, managers, workers and their representatives, OSH personnel), also by extending the scope of OSH training and information activities to vulnerable groups and dangerous sectors of activity
  • Advise on and coordinate the preparation of OSH manuals and materials for various target groups and for technical cooperation projects and the development of training modules in the field of OSH according to the priority needs of constituents

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in Engineering, Medicine, Health Sciences or related disciplines
  • Training in occupational safety and health and management (desirable)
  • Eight years of experience at the national level or five years at the international level in occupational safety and health and, more particularly, policy development and advisory services
  • Good knowledge of advanced techniques for the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases
  • Excellent command of French and working knowledge of English
  • Knowledge of Arabic (desirable)
