Aircraft Acquisition: Reps Committee Should Shelve Recommendation

Tinubu

Given Nigeria’s economic struggles, the recommendation for acquiring new aircraft for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima should be shelved.

Development Diaries reports that the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence recently recommended the federal government purchase new aircraft for the president and his vice.

The committee’s recommendation is contained in a report released after it investigated the status of the aircraft in the presidential air fleet.

Nigeria is presently grappling with severe economic challenges, including high inflation rates, the effects of fuel subsidy removal, unemployment, a significant debt burden, and food insecurity, among other challenges.

Investing in luxury items like new aircraft for government officials during such a period sends a troubling message about Tinubu’s administration’s priorities.

The funds could be better utilised in addressing more urgent economic issues, such as stabilising the currency, addressing inflation, and reducing national debt.

Also, the economic hardship faced by the masses underscores the need for more prudent fiscal management by the government. Millions of citizens are living below the poverty line, struggling to afford basic necessities such as food.

The government must focus on alleviating the suffering of its people by channeling resources into initiatives that are crucial for economic recovery and growth.

Acquiring a new aircraft should not be priority at this time, after all, President Tinubu has at different times urged Nigerians to endure the suffering and hardship brought upon by the removal of fuel subsidy.

Development Diaries calls on the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence to shelve its recommendation in light of the economic situation of the country.

Doing this will demonstrate solidarity with citizens and will help in rechanneling funds to more critical sectors.
