The Mufulira My Hometown Association, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has donated hygiene products and two electrical stoves to the Mufulira Correctional Facility in Zambia.
The NGO, it was gathered, also disinfected the entire facility to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and other infectious diseases.
Vice-chairperson of the NGO, Emmanuel Mbashi, said that Mufulira My Hometown Association had set aside an ambitious agenda for this year, to address the challenges facing inmates, including inadequate mattresses, cooking units, and hygiene sanitary products for women.
‘These are urgent concerns needing immediate address because the inmates are our brothers, children and mothers’, Mbashi said.
‘With limited sources from voluntary members’ contributions, we decided to first procure two stoves – one for the male kitchen and the other for the female kitchen’.
Mbashi said the association had procured sanitary products for female inmates to last up to the end of the year, adding that plans were underway to procure mattresses for the entire correctional facility.
‘We also have a plan to drum up public awareness workshops on sexual, reproductive health and family planning to the most vulnerable communities in Mufulira’, he added.
‘We intend to also distribute hygiene products to girls in schools’.
Mbashi said his association had already planned to train qualified volunteer members with his outfit to conduct outreach workshops on issues relating to child marriage and early pregnancies in a bid to complement government’s efforts to mitigate the scourge.
The association has donated sanitary pads to over 150 schoolgirls at Minambe, Luansobe and Murundu community schools through the Go-Girl-Go project.
