The World Health Organisation (WHO), in collaboration with other agencies tied to the United Nations (UN), has established the Global Action for Measurement of Adolescent health (GAMA) advisory group.
The group of experts, Development Diaries understands, advises WHO and other UN agencies – such as UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Women, the World Bank Group, and the World Food Programme (WFP) – in their process of harmonising and prioritising adolescent health indicators, to converge data collection and reporting efforts.
This move, according to the WHO, was made because adolescent health data collection efforts and indicators used were often not standardised or consistently used across countries and populations, limiting the comparability, sharing and use of the data.
It is understood that adolescents between the ages of ten and 19 play a crucial role in achieving many of the sustainable development goals as they represent over 16 percent of the global population.
