Uganda: Rotary Launches Empowerment Projects

The Rotary Club of Kisugu Victoria View has launched several projects to support the economic development of Yaka zone in Uganda’s Namuwongo slum.

Development Dairies reports that the projects, worth $80,000 or Shs 297 million, include a briquette-making factory, a brick-making factory, a greenhouse and urban farming project, and financial literacy skilling of residents.

The projects also include the installation of ten water taps and improvements to sanitation and hygiene infrastructure through the construction and cleaning of drainage channels, construction of a toilet facility, garbage clearing and waste management.

Nearly half of Ugandan households experience multidimensional poverty, more than double the percentage living in monetary poverty, according to a 2020 report by the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

Speaking at the launch event, President of Rotary Club of Kisugu Victoria View, Ritah Baraka, said, ‘We believe that these projects will make a significant impact on the lives of the people living in Yoka Zone.

‘By supporting residents through economic empowerment and improving access to basic needs like water and sanitation, we hope to contribute to the long-term economic and social development of the community.

‘The economic development project will provide residents with money making opportunities through the various activities, contributing to job creation and growth in the local economy.

‘The water taps and improvements to sanitation and hygiene infrastructure will help prevent the spread of waterborne diseases and provide residents with access to clean water and better sanitation facilities’.

For his part, Kampala Minister, Minsa Kabanda, commended the organisation for the project, adding that it would benefit the community.
