Uganda: Red Cross Provides Water Support

In a bid to address water challenges faced by refugees and Ugandans, the Uganda Red Cross Society has installed a T95 water tank at the Nyakabande refugee holding centre in Uganda.

It is understood that the Uganda Red Cross Society received funding from the European Union (EU) Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid for the project.

Development Diaries also gathered that this is not the first T95 water tank that the humanitarian organisation has put up at the refugee holding centre.

‘Another T95 water tank installed at the Nyakabande holding centre to address the water challenges. Thanks to support from partners’, Uganda Red Cross Society tweeted.

‘With this, the refugees can access clean and safe water quickly’.

This project is in line with goal six of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aims to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all.

In most of Uganda’s rural communities, water supply is not only inadequate but also highly contaminated.

According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), nearly 90 percent of Uganda’s population live in rural areas, and roughly two thirds of them lack access to safe water.

Data from Water For People also puts rural access to basic water services in the country at 41 percent. These huge gaps in drinking water services informed Lifewater’s declaration of a water crisis in the country in 2020.

Lack of access to clean water is a huge threat to public health and ensuring that households have sufficient access to safe water is paramount to preventing water-related diseases and keeping children in school.

The Ugandan government had announced an ambitious goal of reaching everyone in the country with clean water by 2040.

The government, according to the plan, plans to reach this goal by investing in quality water projects, which involve restoring and maintaining clean water sources as well as promoting hygiene and investing in sanitation facilities.
