The management of the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) Two Project has shared its success story of working to promote the acceptance and use of family planning across states in Nigeria.
Development Diaries learnt that the NURHI Two Project has supported the Lagos State government in promoting the use of family planning among the Lagos population for the past five years.
This support, designed to increase access to family planning, was implemented using the project’s evidence-based, three-pronged approach of advocacy, demand generation and service delivery.
With the first phase of the project implemented across six cities – Abuja, Ibadan, Ilorin, Benin, Zaria, and Kaduna – between 2009 and 2015, the NURHI Two Project involved scaling up the proven model to new locations in Oyo, Lagos and Kaduna from 2015 to 2020.
It is understood that the new locations have shown an increase in the contraceptive prevalence rate and the overall acceptance and use of family planning.
‘More than 70,000 women received family planning services in the local government health facilities supported by the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative in Lagos State’, Get It Together campaign, the overarching umbrella under which NURHI rolled out a series of innovative consumer-focused activities, tweeted.
‘We are proud of this achievement as we closeout our activities after five years in the State. We are also grateful for @gatesfoundation for ensuring we had the resources and funds to achieve these feats in Lagos State for ensuring we had the resources and funds to achieve these feats in Lagos State’.
Through the project, the family planning landscape in Nigeria is reported to have improved, reducing challenges that were prevalent before the year 2009, creating avenues for open family planning discourse and simultaneously increasing access to family planning services.
