Burkina Faso: AU Names Election Commission Leader

Ahead of the general election in Burkina Faso, the African Union (AU) has appointed former Senate President in Rwanda, Bernard Makuza, as head of the AU Election Observation Commission.

The delegation includes former politicians, political experts, members of civil society organisations, and academicians.

‘Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, I am very honoured by the trust you place in me by appointing me as Head of Election Observation Mission in the general elections in Burkina Faso’, Makuza tweeted.

‘It is with humility that I accept to make my contribution with the deployed delegation.

Makuza, who served as President of the Senate of Rwanda from 14 October, 2014, to 17 October, 2019, also said, ‘I thank our leadership for giving me the opportunity to serve the country in different dockets, which is the reason behind the recent appointment. This also shows how AU’s trust in our country’.

Among the duties of the election observers include deterring fraud, exposing problems and irregularities, providing accurate measures of the quality of the 22 November election, and provide recommendations for improving the process for the next poll.

President Roch Marc Christian Kabore and 13 others are running for the most powerful office in the west African nation.
