Budget Padding Claim Requires Thorough Investigations

VAPP Act

The President Bola Tinubu administration has denied the allegation of padding the 2024 budget by an additional three trillion naira; however, there should be investigations following such a claim.

Development Diaries reports that Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi Central raised the alarm over the alleged padding, claiming that the executive is implementing a budget other than the one approved on 01 January, 2024.

According to the lawmaker, a N25 trillion budget was debated and passed, not the N28.7 trillion that is currently being implemented.

While it is timely that the presidency has denied the allegation, the presidency needs to do more to earn public trust. The allegation simply signifies a breach of trust and integrity in the government’s financial management processes.

Citizens expect their elected representatives to act with transparency and accountability when handling public funds. However, if there are allegations of manipulating budgets for selfish interests, it undermines the credibility of the government as a whole.

Addressing and rectifying such allegations is crucial not only for restoring trust in governance but also for fostering sustainable development and prosperity.

Development Diaries calls for a thorough investigation into the allegations by Ningi, and the process of investigation should be transparent and publicised to assure the Nigerian people of the government’s commitment to accountability and integrity.
