What: Africa Climate Week 2022
When: 29 August–02 September, 2022
Where: Libreville, Gabon
The 2022 Africa Climate Week (ACW) is a precursor of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt.
The event, organised by the United Nations Climate Change in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme, and the World Bank Group, is designed to empower stakeholders to drive climate action across countries, communities and economies.
Other partners include the African Union, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the United Nations office in Gabon.
ACW 2022 is geared toward providing a platform for governments, cities, private sector leaders, financial institutions and civil society to address the climate change crisis in the context of regional priorities and the need for a green recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Data from the AfDB shows that Africa is the most vulnerable continent to climate change despite having contributed the least to global warming and having the lowest emissions.
The bank noted that climate change poses systemic risks to the continent’s economies, infrastructure investments, water and food systems, public health, agriculture, and livelihoods.
