Malala Fund is organising the National Moment on Basic and Secondary Education in Nigeria to call government attention to the context analysis of the state of basic and secondary education in the country.

Africa’s most populous country has been slow to fully recognise and address the gendered barriers to education. This problem has been compounded by a poor understanding of how to make education gender transformative.

Gender-responsive education sector planning and budgeting are not mainstreamed practices, and where they do exist, there are often failures in implementation.

Also, Nigeria has seen a reversal in progress in education over the last few years, with a disproportionate impact on the most marginalised, especially girls. As a percentage of government expenditure, education has decreased from 9.3 percent in 2015 to 5.1 percent in 2021.

Furthermore, a recent UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report estimated that 20 million children and youth are excluded from education in the country. This figure increased from 13 million in 2010, and implies that the West African country is the third largest out-of-school population in the world after India and Pakistan.

This event, therefore, ties into the #EducationNOW9ja campaign activities being implemented by the Malala Fund Education Champion Network (ECN) Nigeria under the Joint Advocacy Grant.

The high-level event, Development Diaries understands, will create a platform for the ECN to present the federal manifesto to representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the Education Development Partner Group, social influencers, general media and diverse networks of civil society from across the country.

Special moments, according to the organisers, will be dedicated to girls sitting and speaking at the table with critical education stakeholders in Nigeria.
