Tunisia: NGOs to Get AFD Funding for Innovation

The French Development Agency (AFD) has encouraged humanitarian organisations in Tunisia and other partners of France to apply for funding through the Fund for Innovation in Development (FID).

FID is an initiative that supports innovations in the service of the fight against poverty and inequality in the world.

Launched in December 2020, this funding mechanism is expected to stimulate, accelerate, and implement innovative approaches to development.

About 60 percent of Tunisia’s population are poor or vulnerable and the Covid-19 pandemic has made the situation worse, according to the World Bank.

Funding, according to AFD, is granted on flexible terms, with several grant levels set up and all stages of implementing innovation taken into account.

FID is expected to support project preparation with up to €50,000; pilot stage with up to €200,000; the test and position for scale stage with up to €1.5 million; and the final stage with up to four million euros.

According to a statement, FID prioritises projects that can boost development in a more efficient, rapid or cost-effective manner.

FID supports innovations in education, health, climate change and gender equality, targeting all types of structures in low- and middle-income countries.

‘Funding in the form of grants will be made available to proposed projects from all types of organisations, including research institutions, NGOs, governments, businesses and others. The budget for FID’s first year is €15 million’, AFD said in the statement.
