South Africa: What Is Government Doing amid Water Scarcity?

The residents of Johannesburg, South Africa, have continued to experience a lack of water due to the crippling of reservoirs.

Development Diaries reports that thousands of residents have endured another week without water due to damage to the reservoirs that serve Randburg and the city’s western areas.

It is understood that the water outage affects over 300,000 people in Randburg, and has been worsened by subsequent pump station outages, maintenance issues, and pipe bursts.

This has affected residents, especially those with special needs, as they have expressed their frustration over the lack of basic hygiene. The residents are also demanding a comprehensive solution beyond water tankers.

The fundamental rights of people are significantly impacted by water outages in Johannesburg, especially when it comes to access to clean water, sanitary conditions, and overall health.

It is quite difficult for residents to meet their fundamental needs, such as drinking, cooking, and cleanliness, without consistent access to water.

Also, vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are particularly at risk when there is water outage for a long time.

Development Diaries calls on the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality to find immediate solutions to the water issue and work collaboratively with stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions.
