Two non-profit media bodies, South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) and the National Press Club (NPC), have announced their new leadership teams that will lead the organisations for the next two years.
Development Diaries reports that in SANEF, the Politics Editor at Newsroom Africa, Sbu Ngalwa, was elected president, while the Editor in Chief at News24, Adriaan Basson, is his deputy.
The former Chairperson of Primedia EWN, Mahlatse Mahlase, was chosen to be the Secretary-General, while Nwabisa Makunga, from the Sowetan, is Treasurer.
Meanwhile, in the National Press Club, the Editor of the Pretoria News (independent media), Val Boje, was elected as the Chairperson, and Willem van der Putte, from the Africa News Agency (ANA), is his deputy.
SANEF had announced that its Nat Nakasa Award for media integrity would be given to the entire South African media industry for its coverage of the Covid-19 crisis.
Ngalwa said, ‘Journalists have been at the forefront of telling the unfolding story of South Africa’s response to Covid-19.
‘They have gone into the heart of the storm, risking injury and infection… For this reason, SANEF is recognising the brave efforts of each and every journalist in the country who continue to work under challenging conditions’.
SANEF members include editors, senior journalists, journalism teachers, academics, and associates, while the NPC is open to working journalists and those in associated fields, including government and corporate communications.
