Passion for Life Initiative (PFLI) has urged the federal and state governments in Nigeria to set up task committees on urgent measures for flood disasters.
Development Diaries reports that millions of persons were impacted by flooding in parts of Nigeria last year, with over 600 persons losing their lives in what was described as the country’s worst flooding disaster in a decade.
The devastating effects were also recorded in agriculture, transport infrastructure, houses, power lines worth millions of dollars.
PFLI advised that there is a need for task committees in all the states that are prone to flood disasters.
States mostly affected were Jigawa, with 166,000 persons affected, Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States with 210,800 people affected, Bayelsa State with 217,900 people affected.
Other states were Kaduna with 9,500 affected, Niger with 37,000 people affected and Anambra with 729,000 people affected.
Development Diaries calls on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which is responsible for managing disaster issues in Nigeria, to ensure state-level preparedness to mitigate flooding disasters this year.
