Nigeria: FNM Faults National Assembly on Recess

Free Nigerian Movement (FNM) has faulted Nigeria’s National Assembly for extending its recess for another two weeks.

Acting Clerk of the National Assembly, Ojo Amos, had announced on 12 September, 2020, that the resumption of plenary, earlier scheduled to hold on 15 September, had been rescheduled to hold on 29 September.

‘This is to inform all distinguished senators and honourable members of the National Assembly that the resumption of plenary sessions earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 15 September, 2020, is hereby rescheduled for Tuesday, 29 September, 2020’, he said.

Convener of the FNM, Raphael Adebayo, said although the lawmakers were entitled to go on recess, it was, however, ill-timed.

He said that the lawmakers should have attended to significant bills requiring their attention.

On his part, the Executive Director of Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, urged federal lawmakers to develop a framework for constituency engagement and consultation to ensure full participation of the electorate in legislative activities.

Rafsanjani also called for quick passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), which is aimed at ensuring transparency and efficiency in the country’s oil and gas sector.
