NAWE Launches Environment Initiative

The Network of African Women Environmentalists (NAWE) has launched its Guardians4Earth and Landscape Guardian’s Campaign.

The aim of the campaign is to unite African men and women to work as ‘guardians’ of their landscapes, supporting restoration over the next decade (2021–2030).

Development Diaries understands that Uganda’s young climate change activist, Vanessa Nakate, is already doing that as she advocates not only for her community in the East African country but also speaks about pertinent environmental issues across the Congo Basin. Like many of her young peers, she is keen to shape decision making on this important discourse.

With a view to achieving the sustainable development goals, NAWE advised African policymakers and youths to be engaged at the community level, where most action is needed, and be present and understand that issues such as climate change affect everyone directly or indirectly.

They also advised policymakers and youth leaders to listen as listening is critical for community cohesion and action, especially as it relates to restoration.

Additionally, the organisation said that local knowledge and skills should drive the decision-making of policymakers and youth leaders in Africa, and they should come up with policies to support green jobs.
