Lesotho: Help, UNICEF to Empower Adolescent Girls

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Lesotho has partnered with Help Lesotho to empower 583 pregnant adolescent girls and young mothers with knowledge of sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) and sexual and gender-based violence.

Development Diaries reports that UNICEF Lesotho made this known in a tweet on its official Twitter handle in response to a tweet on the programme.

It tweeted, @unicefLesotho has been supporting @HelpLesotho to empower pregnant girls and young mothers with the motivation, knowledge and strategies necessary to raise healthy, well-adjusted children. Thanks to @Sida for the generous support and partnership.

According to Help Lesotho, the pregnant adolescent girls and young mothers were between the ages of 15 and 24 in Botha Bothe and Thaba Tseka regions.

Figures from a 2018 Lesotho Demographic Health Survey (LDHS) show that the adolescent birth rate in Lesotho is 94 per 1,000 girls aged between 15 and 19 years.

Furthermore, a 2017 report by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) listed Lesotho among the leading countries battling with early and unintended pregnancies.
