The National Council of Non-governmental Organisations has urged the government to liaise with mobile service providers in the country to give free internet for a month to enable citizens access vital information on coronavirus.

The Chairperson of the Council, Moses Cheboi, said, ‘[W]e request the government to work with mobile service providers to have internet supplied across the country as a matter of urgency to help people be updated and promote online learning’.

Kenya has registered three positive cases of Covid-19 with three more suspected cases awaiting confirmation. ‘[T]his move will go a long way in keeping Kenyans informed on what to do during a period of looming uncertainty. The country might lose a lot if drastic measures are not taken’, Cheboi said.

Cheboi appealed to the government to also make hand sanitisers and masks available to Kenyans as it will help to contain the spread of the virus. He also urged banks and other lending institutions to review their credit facilities and consider zero-rating interest during the period in which the pandemic lasts.
