President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive mandating a 60 percent reduction in travel expenses for both domestic and international events comes with some question marks.
This directive applies to all federal ministries, departments and agencies, the Office of the President, the Office of the Vice President, the First Lady’s office, and the wife of the Vice President.
But with Nigerians familiar with the ‘do what I say and not what I do’ mentality, public officeholders must ensure they earn the trust of citizens this time.
Recall that the president budgeted N15.96 billion for international and local travels in 2024. So announcing a move to reduce travel costs after assenting to the 2024 budget without setting the budgetary foundation for such a move seems suspicious.
The president must ensure that his directive is fully implemented to free up funds for other crucial development needs across the country.
He must also shun the ‘fire brigade’ approach to governance and instead lay firm foundations for critical actions to be taken for the benefit of Nigerians. For their part, citizens must closely monitor the implementation of this directive to ensure compliance.
