A trending video of two Nigerian policemen demanding money from a foreign biker leaves much to be desired in Nigeria’s reform of the police.
Development Diaries reports that the policemen were recorded along Moniya Road in Oyo State, southwest Nigeria, according to the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi.
The officers flagged down the biker, asking her where she was from and where she was heading. The biker replied that she was from the Netherlands and that she was on her way to Abuja.
Speaking in pidgin, one of the officers asked, ‘Wetin you bring come’.
Police officers caught on camera trying to extort a female biker.

This action by the police officers shows total unprofessionalism and a lack of training.
To address issues that have to do with the welfare of officers and other concerns, the police urgently need reforms to rebuild public trust in their ability to uphold law and order.
For police officers to perform their jobs well and uphold peace and order, their welfare is essential. Sadly, low pay, unpleasant working conditions, and a shortage of necessary supplies have undermined the morale and performance of many officers.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu, in October 2023, set up a constitutional review committee to carry out ‘comprehensive police reforms’. It is understood that the committee was meant to develop ideas that would characterise the new Nigeria Police Force.
Nigerians, however, still await the outcome of the committee.
Development Diaries calls on Nigeria’s Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, to ensure that police reforms are prioritised to achieve a standard and professional engagement.
