World Health Organisation (WHO) is seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of Regional Advisor.

The primary role of WHO is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations system.

Responsibilities

  • Support member states through policy analysis and development of appropriate frameworks to promote national capacity building action programmes
  • Provide overall coordination on policies and strategies relating to subject matter through policy- and situation analysis and the development and/or dissemination of frameworks and guidelines
  • Develop institutional capacity for sustainable results of the WHO action programmes in the area(s) assigned in member states through the provision of advice on the design of structures
  • Coordinate the design of frameworks and guidelines for the member states and their institutions including through the preparation of technical reports, discussion papers and technical studies based on research and analytical work
  • Design and disseminate standard procedures, guidelines and tools for collection and analysis of information on the assigned topics
  • Lead and expand WHO’s leadership in the assigned areas of specialisation (e.g., outbreak investigation, verification, risk assessment and rapid public health response in the event of a public health emergency of potential concern, etc.)
  • Build partnerships and collaborate with appropriate technical networks, institutions, universities and WHO collaborating centres for developing appropriate training courses for national capacity building
  • Foster collaboration and coordinate efforts with international partners and donor agencies to mobilise resources and facilitate effective utilisation of resources for projects and new initiatives

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Public Health or a related field
  • Medical degree with postgraduate qualifications
  • Ten years, minimum, of experience in the area of public health, providing technical advice and policy development services at international level
  • Professional experience at the regional or country level, delivering and managing public health programmes while providing technical advice and support to regional and or country level counterparts
  • High level of public health expertise focusing on clinical and public health and epidemiology of chronic diseases
  • Expert knowledge of the substantive field(s) of work
  • Excellent drafting skills to produce reports, policies and documents on subject matter(s)
  • Proven ability to manage the work of a team requiring an in-depth understanding of its strategic direction
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Professional competence and mastery of subject matter
  • Sound judgment and decision making skills to identify key issues in a complex situation and find solution to problems
  • Expert knowledge of English
  • Intermediate knowledge of French and Arabic
