The New Zealand Global Research Alliance Doctoral Scholarship (NZ-GRADS) is a fully-funded opportunity for students from developing countries who are ready to complete their PhDs in the science of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.


  • Successful candidates can bring their family to live in New Zealand with them
  • A successful candidate’s partner or spouse will be able to apply for an open work visa for the duration of the study of the candidate
  • The children of successful candidates will be able to enrol as domestic students in New Zealand’s free state schools
  • The successful candidate will be studying at a top New Zealand university or research institute
  • The successful candidate will be actively supported through various extensions and networking events hosted in New Zealand
  • Successful candidates may also be able to work alongside their studies (PhD students studying in New Zealand usually have unlimited work rights)
  • Successful candidates will receive support when they arrive (there are systems in place to help them and their families settle in)


This scholarship is open to all students from developing countries (as defined by the World Trade Organisation). However, the PhD research topic of the candidate must be related to greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural systems.
