INTERSOS is seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of Protection Coordinator.

INTERSOS is a non-profit humanitarian aid organisation that works to assist victims of natural disaster and armed conflict.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design of the protection strategy for Cameroon, Central African Republic and Chad and provide technical support and assistance in the implementation of protection-related activities
  • Contextualise and adapt internal and global directives, ensuring they are deployed and known by staff members
  • Ensure the cohesion and harmonisation of protection activities and services among the different implementation sites of each mission, also through the harmonisation of existing protection tools and the creation of new relevant tools
  • Provide training and workshops for protection staff to build skills on specific protection topics identified
  • Organise training and workshops for non-protection staff members to develop their skills and knowledge relating to protection principles and enable them to integrate protection in different sectors (mainstreaming protection)
  • Regularly assess the protection needs and gaps of target populations in current and future areas of operations, periodically update the analysis of the protection situation and inform the programme teams accordingly
  • As appropriate, develop tools for data collection and analysis (protection risks trackers, gender analysis, etc.)
  • Create opportunities for sharing experiences and learning within the protection team in order to strengthen cooperation and collaboration
  • Provide strategic protection analysis and develop periodic trend reports (including aspects of conflict analysis, gender and risk management) based on programme experiences to improve protection activities
  • Ensure protection data is collected, archived, processed, analysed and disseminated in an ethical manner in accordance with internal data protection protocols
  • Support missions in the use of protection databases already in use in countries and in the rollout of innovative systems
  • Take part in the project writing process in each mission in order to ensure the quality and compliance with internal and international standards of protection interventions and the inclusion of transversal protection in other intervention sectors
  • Carry out regular monitoring visits to the field and provide support tools to monitor the quality of programme implementation
  • Identify opportunities for new protection interventions and support assessments and development of new project proposals
  • In cooperation with the accountability unit, support the development of complaints mechanisms for beneficiaries and ensure complaints are handled properly
  • In cooperation with the accountability unit, monitor the implementation of child protection (PE) and protection against sexual exploitation and abuse (PEAS) policies in each country
  • Supervise, mentor and coach directly the protection specialists and protection officers of the three missions, and carry out regular performance evaluations (IRP)
  • Review the workplans of protection specialists and protection officers and define priorities with protection project managers
  • Organise ad hoc protection meetings with protection specialists, protection officers and project managers in order to share challenges and priorities, and develop action plans to address them
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with donors, partners, project stakeholders and other relevant organisations
  • Ensure protection specialists and protection officers maintain productive relationships with subgroups in the field
  • Ensure key protection concerns are communicated to relevant stakeholders to advocate respect for human rights and minimum standards of protection
  • Coordinate with other internal services to ensure good collaboration
  • Network with protection coordinators from other missions to share resources and best practices
  • Discuss with the protection advisor and report regularly on the protection programmes of the three countries of assignment, ensuring the compilation of the monthly protection reports of each country, the compilation of protection databases and the use of agreed standard indicators with the protection advisor
  • Ensure regular communication with the regional management

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, or a related field
  • Master’s degree or LLM in Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, or related field (desirable)
  • Five years, minimum, of relevant professional experience in protection-related sectors, preferably within an international NGO
  • Strong understanding of the humanitarian emergency context
  • Ability to work in a very volatile security environment
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines with little supervision and under pressure
  • Great communication skills, written and oral, and maintenance of relationships with experience in managing work teams
